8 Mile Actor Mekhi Phifer Says There Will Never Be a Sequel

Mekhi Phifer, who co-starred in the film alongside Em, has stated that there would be no sequel.

TMZ released a video of a street chat with Hollywood actor Mekhi Phifer on January 2. The camerawoman informed the actor that 8 Mile had recently celebrated its 20th anniversary in November and asked him the following question: People are questioning why there hasn't been a sequel.

In response, Mekhi stated that there is no likelihood of a sequel coming, and he explained why "Sometimes it's best to just leave it at one," he stated. "Sometimes it's just best to leave it alone. Once you make a classic, no reason to fool around with it."

The actor also said that there has never been any discussion about filming a sequel film, whether with him or with Eminem.

"Nope. Probably not. Never," he said. "I think, you know, leave the classics alone and it'll be all good. Let's just live with the 8 Mile."

The camera operator then suggested that the sequel focuses on what happens to Eminem's character B-Rabbit when he achieves fame in the rap business two decades later. While Phifer believed the new plot arc was intriguing, he declined to act in the film and doubts Eminem would be interested in a sequel.

"The story that we told is the story," he said. "You know, I mean, it could be interesting, but I wouldn't be in it, and I'm sure Eminem wouldn't be in it either."

Eventually, Mehki Phifer believes that 8 Mile should be enjoyed as a stand-alone picture, with no need for a sequel.

8 Mile is perhaps Eminem's most successful film and music career. In the film, Em plays Jimmy Smith (aka B-Rabbit), a Detroit rapper who fights his way to the top of the combat rap circuit. Mekhi portrays Jimmy's best buddy and rap battle host, Future. Em received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for "Lose Yourself" in 2003.
