Common’s Top 5 Chicago Rappers: A Must-See List

Common Reveals His Top 5 Chicago Rappers: Kanye, Lupe, Durk, and More

During a recent appearance on WGCI 107.5's Chicago Morning Show, Common was asked to name his top five Chicago emcees.

Known for his deep roots in the city’s hip-hop scene, Common was quick to respond with his selections for the "Mount Rushmore of Chicago rappers."

Starting with an obvious choice, Common declared:

“Kanye [West] is going on there.”

He continued by adding another prominent figure:

“I’ma put Lupe Fiasco on there.”

Both artists have made significant contributions to the rap scene and have achieved considerable success.

Common’s list didn’t stop there. He also named Twista, known for his rapid-fire lyrical delivery, and Lil Durk, who Common praised for his recent achievements.

“Durk is doing what he should do,”

Common noted, acknowledging the younger rapper’s rise in the industry. In a lighthearted moment, Common excluded himself from the list, drawing laughs from the hosts. Wrapping up his selections, Common added:

“I’m excluding myself because I would be up there, might have to go with Chance [the Rapper] at that point,"

The conversation took an interesting turn when one of the hosts questioned Common’s exclusion of Chief Keef, also known as Sosa. The host argued that Chief Keef had laid the groundwork for rappers like Lil Durk.

“You got Durk on there, but you wouldn’t put the person that made it able for Durk to live? Sosa—Chief Keef. He started the movement.”

Acknowledging Chief Keef’s impact, Common responded:

“Yeah, he did start it, but I gotta say, Durk has been [taking it there].”

This sparked a discussion about the evolution of movements in hip-hop, with Pete Rock, who was also present, adding:

“Sometimes you can start a movement and someone else could just take it higher.”
