Rakim took the opportunity to express respect for both artists while shedding light on the significance of their rivalry. 

He commended Drake and Kendrick for stepping into the arena against each other, risking their commercial success for the sake of artistry.

Rakim Reflects on Kendrick and Drake Beef, Highlighting the Difference Between Real and Mainstream Hip-Hop:

"A lot of people in that position won’t accept no challenge, because they got too much to lose."

Rakim stated in an interview with Billboard. He acknowledged the challenges of maintaining one's artistry while navigating the mainstream landscape, saying:

“it was dope that these brothers put the mainstream success down and said, 'Yeah, let’s do it.'"

The battle between Kendrick and Drake transcends mere competition; it symbolizes a cultural divide in hip-hop. 

Rakim articulated that their feud personifies the clash between what he terms "real hip-hop" and its mainstream counterpart. He noted:

"The battle put a lot of things in perspective — because it showed the difference between real hip-hop and mainstream hip-hop."

As he observed, the distinctions between these two sides of hip-hop have blurred over recent years. 

However, Kendrick’s recent victories in their lyrical exchanges serve to remind upcoming artists of their potential paths within the genre.

"Younger artists now know that there’s a difference."

Rakim emphasized, making it clear that awareness of this distinction is crucial for the future of the culture.

"The battle was very needed for the genre, I tip my hat to them brothers. Let’s just hope that it stays to the music."
