Machine Gun Kelly Breaks Silence on His Father’s M*rder Trial
Machine Gun Kelly, recently opened up about his challenging upbringing and the profound effect his father’s traumatic childhood had on him.
In an emotional interview on the "Dumb Blonde" podcast with Bunnie XO, released on August 5, MGK discussed the unsettling experiences that shaped both his father’s life and his own.
MGK recounted how his father’s unpredictable reactions to loud noises and stressful situations during his own childhood frustrated him.
“I always used to get so mad at him when I was a kid because if I scared him or he heard a loud boom or a loud noise, he would freak out, like, gnarly freak out. And I would be like, ‘You’re supposed to be a man, dude. Why are you acting like this?’ It just made me hate him. And then you sit there and you think about a kid who was on trial at nine years old for the m*rder of his father.”
MGK Reveals Emotional Details About His Father's M*rder Trial:
This frustration stemmed from a deep-seated trauma his father endured as a child.
The rapper revealed that his father was involved in a tragic incident at the age of nine. During this event, a gun accidentally discharged, leading to the death of MGK’s grandfather.
Both his grandmother and father were present, and though the authorities later found the weapon, they were ultimately acquitted of any wrongdoing.
The trauma from this event had lasting effects on MGK’s father, including severe mental health issues like schizophrenia.
MGK reflected on how these past traumas influenced his own development.
“He had split personality and, you know, schizophrenia runs really heavy in that side of the family. So a lot of things I’ve taken on, and I think I’ve projected myself to be somebody who has the stamina to endure all of these things that come with fame and criticism and hate, Because I fought back with all those traumas by becoming what I always wanted my dad to be, which was tough and shake everything off and just fight anyone who comes at you.”
He admitted to adopting a tough exterior to cope with the emotional scars, which he believed was an attempt to emulate the strength he wished his father had shown.
The musician also touched upon his father's death, which occurred on July 5, 2020, the anniversary of MGK’s album "Hotel Diablo".
Despite the heavy legacy, MGK expressed a desire to break free from the generational curses he feels have plagued his family.
“Every medium that I've spoke to says there's a generational curse on all the men in my family, that they will die alone, and they've all died alone. I’m the seventh generation, which means that I should be able to break the curse.”
Through his music and personal growth, MGK hopes to forge a new path, leaving behind the shadow of his family’s past.
